Turn on call forwarding in about two minutes
Your customers keep calling the number they know. Only the calls you don't answer get forwarded to the number we give you, and that's what triggers the text. You can turn it off the same way you turned it on.
Before you start
- We'll send you your forwarding number. It's a local number we set up for your shop. Use it everywhere this guide says "your forwarding number".
- Have your shop's business phone in your hand. If you aren't sure what kind of phone service you have, see step 1.
- These are the standard steps. Carriers change them now and then, so if something doesn't work, email hello@savedjob.com and we'll walk you through it.
1. What kind of phone does the shop use?
- A cell phone (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile or similar): go to 2A.
- An internet phone system (RingCentral, Google Voice, Ooma, Grasshopper, Vonage or similar, usually with an app or a website to log in to): go to 2B.
- A regular landline from the phone or cable company: go to 2C.
- Not sure? Email us the number your customers call and we'll tell you.
2A. Cell phone
You dial a short code from the phone, then listen for a confirmation tone or message. Use the 10-digit forwarding number, with no spaces.
Other carriers (US Cellular, Cricket, Metro and so on) use similar codes. Email us your carrier and we'll look up the exact one.
2B. Internet phone system
Log in to your phone provider's app or website and find the setting for forwarding calls you don't answer. It's often called call handling, call forwarding, unanswered calls or after-hours rules. Set it to forward unanswered (and busy) calls to your forwarding number after about 20 seconds. The exact wording is different at each provider, so email us your provider's name and we'll send the exact steps.
Important: look for a setting called keep original caller ID, show caller's number or pass through caller ID and turn it on. Without it, some systems forward the call as coming from your own number, and we can't text a customer whose number we can't see. If this happens, we'll send you a text telling you so.
2C. Regular landline
Call your phone company and ask them to turn on call forward no answer (and busy) to your forwarding number. Some companies charge a few dollars a month for it. They'll usually give you a code to turn it on and off yourself.
3. Test it (two minutes)
Texts go out to real customers only after carrier approval (usually about two weeks), so until then the test confirms the forwarding works and we'll tell you the day texts go live.
If something looks wrong
- The call never reaches the message: the forwarding code probably didn't take. Dial it again and listen for the confirmation, or email us.
- Your voicemail answers first: on some phones, voicemail picks up before the forward. Email us your carrier and we'll find the setting that fixes it.
- You got a text saying the caller's number was missing: turn on "keep original caller ID" (see 2B) or email us. As a backup we can switch you to a different setup that doesn't need forwarding.
Turning it off
Use the cancel code in 2A, or switch the forwarding setting off in your provider's settings. Calls go back to ringing your phone and voicemail as before. Carriers may bill forwarded calls as normal minutes on your plan, which isn't an issue on most unlimited plans.
